Tokyo Central Wholesale Market has three flower sections: Kita-adachi, Ohta and Itabashi. Ornamental plants such as cut flowers and potted flowers must be kept fresh like perishable foods. The production and price are greatly affected by natural conditions such as the weather; flowers are designated as one of the items to by handled by the central wholesale markets in Japan.

The markets handled 598 million cut flowers (2 million cut flowers a day), 23 million potted flowers (84,000 potted flowers a day), 59 billion yen (216 million yen a day) total in 1993.
