There are 9 central wholesale markets handling vegetables and fruits in Tokyo. They handled 2.7 million tons (9,940 tons a day) of vegetables and fruits, 702 billion yen (2.6 billion yen a day) total in 1993. Ohta market, the Japan's largest market built on the reclaimed land from Tokyo Bay, handled about 3,272 tons of vegetables and fruits a day.

Vegetables such as cabbage, onion, radish, chinese cabbage and potato are handled in large quantities. As for fruits, mandarin orange is the biggest item that accounts for 20% of all fruits handled.
